Importing OVA into VCSA 6.5 fails - The operation failed for an unknown reason

I'm trying to import an OVA via the vSphere Flash Client. The VCSA is running 6.5 GA, however I@m getting the following error.

The SSL certificate is imported and as you can see from the attached screenshot, there are no SSL warnings in the browser.

The VCSA was configured with the IP as it's system name. I think there is another issue and the SSL warning is just a guess at the problem.

Has anyone else seen this behavior before? The particular OVA file imported fine with 6.0. I'm unable to import it via ESXi because it needs to be done via the VC due to an error trying it that way earlier.

The operation failed for an undetermined reason. Typically this problem occurs due to certificates that the browser does not trust. If you are using self-signed or custom certificates, open the URL below in a new browser tab and accept the certificate, then retry the operation.

UEFI Secure Boot support for guest Linux VM on Workstation 12 Pro

Hi,

Does Workstation Pro 12 or ESXi 6 support UEFI Secure Boot for guest Linux VM (RHEL 7.x or Cent OS 7.x) ??

I am trying to create a guest Linux VM image using either ESXi or Workstation Pro 12, that has UEFI Secure Boot enabled.

In VMWare Workstation, I enabled 'Boot with EFI instead of BIOS' setting in the Advanced settings for the guest VM.

But Still I am not able seeing the Secure Boot getting enabled in guest VM.

How can I get the secure boot enabled for the guest Linux VMs using Workstation Pro or ESXi ?

thank you,

Kumar Talinki

Re: two questions about VMRC

1. The power operations should be available and working in VMRC if you have the relevant permissions on the host.

2. Yes, you can mount local or remote ISOs. To switch between the two types, open the Virtual Machine Settings dialog, click on the CD/DVD drive, and choose local or remote from the dropdown list.

Hi, rajeevsrikant

Its version is 6.2.2 and I can see the Networking & Security icon from the vCenter Web Client.

But there is a message that "No NSX manager available".

I still don't know how & where to power it up.

The fix shipped with VMRC 9.0 on 2016-08-28 and allows users with "Interact with console" permissions on a single VM to connect successfully.

Hi jwvm27,

Welcome to Fusion Community.

If you want to use the share folder function. you have to choose 'no' to install the open-vm-tools.

Thanks and Regards

Hi Kumar,

ESXi 6.5 introduces guest Secure Boot support; It should work well with recent Windows and Linux guest OSes with OS-level support for UEFI Secure Boot.  Instructions are here: Enable or Disable UEFI Secure Boot for a Virtual Machine

Note that you'll obtain best results by using no older than RHEL/CentOS 7.3 as the guest OS... There were a few issues with our device drivers (particularly SVGA driver and vmmouse driver) which were only evident with Secure Boot enabled, and those issues have only been corrected in the most recent releases.

Support for guest Secure Boot is not included in any current versions of Workstation or Fusion.  It's likely that will change in the near future, although I can't say precisely when (product version or date) that might happen.

I've been attempting to update my handy document on Using EFI/UEFI firmware in a VMware Virtual Machine, but something is going wrong with that and I can't save my edits right now, so the information there regarding Secure Boot will stay out-of-date for now.

If you're using Workstation and really want to try Secure Boot, you can always try running ESXi 6.5 as a VM inside Workstation.

Cheers,

Re: if has any impact or risk not reboot host after installed or updated ESXi driver

Hi RAJ,

Thanks for your reply.

Customer  has been experience a  serious storage issue that cause all VMs unavailable,  So they finally decide to give up share storage even though there will bring such a unconvenient things.

yes ,  reboot is required when we have installed or updated our driver.   but  you won't see newly add drvier info via "esxcli software vib list | grep xxxxx"  if you don't reboot server.

I  also think it will bring a unexpect issue if you don't reboot server accordingly.

but how I advise customer for that?

Customer wants to do that, but they don't want any risk.

I just tested remote passthru on an Omnikey reader and it just worked. Don't know where the problem is.

If you could always reproduce it, please elaborate the steps to reproduce and I will take a look at it.

Thanks,

Sorry, that wasn't a clear response at all now that I read it again.

Navigate to Administration > Catalog Management > Services.

Go through each of them and set to Inactive. This is a pretty clean way to do it - users won't be able to see any items in the Catalog this way, and you could (if on 7.2) set the Home portlet to display a maintenance message.

The alternative is to stop the services on the appliances and windows boxes as you've outlined and then restart them.

VSphere Replication Appliance

Hello,

I am going to setup replication from our Kansas City site to our Phoenix site using Vsphere Replication Appliance and not SRM. The question I have is, our Kansas site is on VSphere 6.0 and Phoenix site is on 5.5. Is it possible to setup replication if the two sites are on different versions? Also, since our Phoenix site is running Vcenter version 5.5, I see that the available vSphere replication versions available for download are 6.0 or 6.5. Is it ok to install either of these versions even if our Phoenix Vcenter version is 5.5?

Thanks,

-Lok

Custom Emails using the event broker. Trying to get vRB costing information into custom emails.

0

I have my custom emails setup using the event broker thanks to gary coburn at extending clouds. While these work and look beautiful. I need to add machine costs into one of the emails that I have set up to send out, to initiate charge back.

Using his code for "Event Broker Get Custom Properties Example" I can see the data I need to reference is there "__DailyCost : {"type":"moneyTimeRate","cost":{"type":"money","currencyCode":"USD","amount":138.3684},"basis":{"type":"timeSpan","unit":4,"amount":1}}"

However I am at a loss on how to add that to my Workflow. I have successfully added Custom Properties such as "Cost Center"  and can get that data into my email.

A VMware contact of mine sent me a workflow he designed that should work, it runs without error however it does not return the correct machine Cost information. No matter what vRB shows for the machine costs it always returns 0.0;

[2016-12-05 14:11:05.634] [I] dailyCost: DynamicWrapper (Instance) : [vCACCAFEDecimalLiteral]-[class com.vmware.vcac.platform.content.literals.DecimalLiteral] -- VALUE : 0.0

[2016-12-05 14:11:05.636] [I] Yearly Cost: 0

Here is the workflow I was given. I had to create a configuration element which is referenced in the workflow “Send Customization Activation Email”, I also had to setup the vCACCAFEHosts attribute as an array of vCACCAFE:vCACHost objects.

His notes on the workflow state;

"One more thing to note on the configuration element – the vCACCAFEHosts attribute is an array of vCACCAFE:vCACHost objects.  These are the vRealize Automation servers configured with the vRA plugin in vRO:

There is usually one per tenant.  My workflow needs a list of all these objects which you would like to search for resources that got provisioned as a result of the request.  The reason for this is because the MachineDailyCost information is stored in the provider side of things.  In order to match the resource to the provider ID, I had to code it to query all catalog resources, match the provider ID, and then grab the daily cost info.  This means that all possible tenants where the resource could be provisioned into need to be added to this array in the configuration element so the code will iterate over all of them.  If you only have one, that’s fine, but I wanted to make sure the bases were covered in case you have more than one tenant.

Yearly cost is calculated as daily cost * 365, thus on leap years, a day will be missing."

So does anyone have any suggestions? P.S. I am aware of Customizing email templates in vRA 7.x (2147429) | VMware KB and can get the machine cost data into a email using the templates. However, this solution present issues of it's own that I prefer not to have to work around if I can get my preferred method working. I welcome all input and appreciate the help.

Re: Setup Windows VM without a C drive

So in order to install, are you suggesting I customize a Windows ISO to include an unattended install response file?

This definitely was not the approach used in the past. I only need to create a single VM (Windows 10 x64). Should I need to create more than one, it would be for different Windows versions.

A separate custom ISO for each? Seems like a time-consuming prospect for a simple goal.

Update:

Ended up trying the approach detailed here for creating a custom ISO: How To Create Unattended Windows 10 USB or ISO

Every time I tried to assign an alternate letter in the unattended file, I ended up with a C: drive.

If you are not using VSAN, please disable the service as some issues have been discovered if the service remains enabled.
